Pangram alternatives

7 best Pangram alternatives in 2026

By , founder · Published · 10 min read

The best Pangram alternatives in 2026 depend on why you are leaving. If it is the account, the daily allowance or the per-scan cap, IsThisAiWritten is free, needs no sign-up, has no word limit and runs in your browser, so the text never leaves your device. GPTZero and Originality.ai also let you check text without signing up, within smaller limits. If you need classroom integrations or more languages, Copyleaks and Turnitin fit better.

Quick picks. Best free, private and with no length limit: IsThisAiWritten. Strongest independent test results: Pangram itself, then GPTZero. Best for schools: Turnitin where it is already licensed, Copyleaks where it isn't. Best for publishers: Originality.ai.

Why look for a Pangram alternative?

Pangram has the strongest independent record of any detector, so the usual reasons to switch are practical:

  • You need an account for every check. The free plan gives 20 credits a day, which Pangram says covers about 2,000 words. That is enough for a short essay or a cover letter; a 90,000-word novel would take 45 days of free checks.
  • Per-scan length is capped. The dashboard accepts 50 to 18,725 words per scan, and paying raises your monthly allowance but not that cap. The same novel has to be cut into at least five pieces, and each piece is judged without the others.
  • API costs changed. The API can take longer documents in chunks, but Pangram 4, released on 29 July 2026, moved API billing to $0.05 per 100 words. Pangram's own announcement says that means a price change "up to 10x for long-form documents".
  • Scans are saved. Pangram does not train on your text, but it keeps scans in your history until you delete them. Some writers would rather an unpublished manuscript never reached another company's server.

1. IsThisAiWritten

Best for: free, private checks of any length, with no account.

This is our own tool. It removes two of the reasons above for leaving Pangram: the account and the length caps. There is no sign-up and no word or character limit, so a 208,000-word novel goes through in one go, with one outcome and one sentence map for the whole book instead of a dozen pieces judged separately. Every word is scanned, never sampled, and a .txt or .docx manuscript is read on your device. The detector downloads once (131 MB) and then runs in your browser, so an unpublished manuscript never reaches another company's server, ours included.

The report gives an outcome (Human, Mixed, AI or Inconclusive) with a confidence word, an AI-likeness score, a sentence map and style notes with a plainer wording one click away. Like any detector, it can be wrong in both directions, so treat a result as a reason to look closer, not as proof. Our methodology explains how it is tested.

  • Pro: free, unlimited, no sign-up, nothing leaves your device (how that works).
  • Pro: an outcome that can say "Inconclusive", a sentence map, and an invisible-character cleaner.
  • Con: English only.
  • Con: the first check downloads the 131 MB model, which is slow on a weak connection.

Price and limits: free. Minimum 50 words; best from 150.

2. GPTZero

Best for: teachers, students and reviewers who want the closest all-round substitute.

GPTZero is the alternative with the most independent testing behind it. In the University of Chicago working paper by Jabarian and Imas it kept its false positive rate around 0.7% at every threshold tested, and in a University of Maryland study it flagged 85.3% of AI articles with a 0.7% false positive rate. Pangram caught more AI text in both, and the gap was widest on humanized text. GPTZero's own benchmark puts it ahead of Pangram, but that test is not independent.

  • Pro: free scans of up to 10,000 characters with no account.
  • Pro: writing replay, plus Canvas and Google Classroom integration on the Professional plan.
  • Con: missed around half or more of humanized passages in most genres in the Chicago paper.
  • Con: keeps a copy of text submitted through the dashboard (API calls are not stored).

Price and limits: a free account adds 10,000 words a month. Premium is $23.99 a month or $12.99 billed yearly for 300,000 words, with up to 50,000 characters per scan. GPTZero became part of Superhuman, the company formerly called Grammarly, in September 2026.

3. Originality.ai

Best for: publishers, agencies and SEO teams checking web content.

Originality.ai was the top commercial tool in the original RAID benchmark paper (85.0% of AI text caught at a 5% false positive rate, before attacks) and came second to Pangram in the Chicago paper. It combines AI detection with plagiarism and fact checking, which suits editorial teams, though its catch rate in the Chicago paper varied a lot by model.

  • Pro: three free scans a day of up to 2,000 words, no account.
  • Pro: browser extensions with a Google Docs writer replay.
  • Con: the free checker may use your text for training (account holders can opt out).
  • Con: minimum of 100 words per scan.

Price and limits: Pro costs $14.95 a month or $12.95 billed yearly for 2,000 credits, at one credit per 100 words. Originality.ai says its current model is "99%+ Accurate at 15% AI Allowed", a vendor claim.

4. Copyleaks

Best for: schools and companies that need many languages and LMS integrations.

Copyleaks detects AI text in more than 30 languages and plugs into Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, D2L, Schoology and others. Walters' 2023 study of 16 detectors rated it among the three most accurate. The 2026 peer-reviewed study in the International Journal for Educational Integrity found it cleared every fully human paper but underestimated AI content, while Pangram did better on AI, hybrid and humanized papers.

  • Pro: up to 25,000 characters per scan without logging in.
  • Pro: AI and plagiarism in one report, with a browser extension and Google Docs add-on.
  • Con: sentence-level highlights need an account.
  • Con: uses scans for training unless you opt out through customer support.

Price and limits: Personal is $16.99 a month or $13.99 billed yearly for 1,200 credits (one credit covers up to 250 words). Its product page claims a .03% false positive rate; its methodology page reports 0.30% at the default setting.

5. Winston AI

Best for: teams that check images as well as text and want a strong benchmark entry.

Winston AI's September 2026 entry is the strongest on the RAID leaderboard. On the default view it catches 100.0% of AI texts at a 5% false positive rate. Two caveats: RAID's AI texts come from older models such as GPT-4 and Llama 2, and we found no peer-reviewed study that tested Winston AI alongside Pangram.

  • Pro: AI image and deepfake detection on every plan.
  • Pro: says it does not train on submitted content without opt-in consent.
  • Con: an account is required, and the free option is a 14-day trial of 2,000 credits.
  • Con: keeps your text as long as the report stays in your dashboard; scans need at least 500 characters.

Price and limits: Essential lists at $18 a month or $10 billed yearly for 100,000 credits, where AI detection costs one credit per word, with up to 200,000 characters per scan.

6. Turnitin

Best for: universities and schools that already license Turnitin Originality.

If your institution has Turnitin, its AI indicator sits inside the similarity report and the LMS you already use. Turnitin says its false positive rate is under 1% for documents with more than 20% AI writing, and it hides scores from 1% to 19% behind an asterisk. In the 2026 peer-reviewed study it underestimated AI content compared with Pangram.

  • Pro: works inside Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard and other LMSs.
  • Pro: detects text altered by paraphrasers and humanizers in English, according to Turnitin.
  • Con: not sold to individuals, and students cannot see the AI report.
  • Con: needs 300 words or more.

Price and limits: no public pricing; 300 to 30,000 words per document.

7. Grammarly

Best for: writers and students who want to show how a document was written.

Grammarly has a free AI detector page and, more usefully, Authorship, which records whether text was typed, pasted or suggested and can replay the writing. Grammarly says its detector "ranks #1 on RAID's independent benchmark", based on its February 2026 entry; at the time of writing Winston AI's newer entry scores slightly higher on the leaderboard's default view. Grammarly has not been in an independent head-to-head test with Pangram that we could find.

  • Pro: Authorship is included in free and Pro plans and works in Google Docs and Word.
  • Pro: strong RAID entry.
  • Con: trains its AI models on content from individual users by default; you can switch this off.
  • Con: in-product AI detection with highlighted passages is a Pro feature.

Price and limits: free web checker; AI detection inside the editor comes with Pro.

When to stay with Pangram. Pangram reads more than 20 languages, marks passages that were edited with AI rather than written by it, and works in Chrome, Firefox, Google Docs, Canvas, Moodle, Google Classroom and Brightspace, with a plagiarism check on paid plans. If you check text in languages other than English, need detection inside your learning platform, or want the "AI-assisted" label, and you can live with an account and a per-scan cap, stay with it.

Using a free checker alongside Pangram

For a long manuscript, one reasonable split is to run the whole text through a free checker with no length limit first, then spend Pangram's 2,000 free daily words, or a paid plan, on the chapters that look most AI-like. You get a second opinion from a different model where it matters, without uploading 90,000 words. If you use ours for the first pass, note that the sentence map ranks sentences against the rest of your own text: it shows where to look first rather than giving each passage a verdict. Our IsThisAiWritten vs Pangram comparison sets the two reports side by side.

How we compared

Between 16 and 18 October 2026 we opened each tool's pricing, help and privacy pages. For accuracy we used studies that tested Pangram and at least one alternative on the same texts: the Chicago working paper (Jabarian and Imas, 2025), the Maryland study (Russell, Karpinska and Iyyer, 2025) and the 2026 peer-reviewed study by Van Vlasselaer, Van Droogenbroeck and Spruyt. For tools never tested alongside Pangram, we note their RAID entries. We did not test competitors ourselves. IsThisAiWritten is listed first because it is our own tool and the free, private option with no length limit. The rest are ordered by how many Pangram users each tool would suit.

Questions

Which AI detector is the most accurate, Pangram or an alternative?

Among the tools independent studies have tested, Pangram. It ranked first in a University of Chicago working paper, a University of Maryland study and a peer-reviewed 2026 study of academic papers, with GPTZero and Originality.ai closest. No detector's result is proof on its own.

Is there a free Pangram alternative with no sign-up?

Yes. IsThisAiWritten needs no account and has no length limit at all, and it runs in your browser, so the text is never uploaded. GPTZero scans up to 10,000 characters and Originality.ai up to 2,000 words (three times a day) without an account.

Does Pangram keep my text?

Pangram's privacy policy says text submitted for detection is collected. For registered users it stays in the scan history until you delete it, and content is removed within 30 days of closing an account. Pangram says it never trains on your data, and offers zero data retention only on custom enterprise plans.
