Turnitin alternatives for students

The best Turnitin alternatives and AI detectors for students in 2026

By , founder · Published · 9 min read

Students looking for an AI detector similar to Turnitin hit the same wall: Turnitin sells only to schools, students can't see its AI report even when their school uses it, and no other detector can tell you what your Turnitin score will be. So the best Turnitin alternative for a student is really a pair of tools, a detector to check a draft before you submit and a way to show how you wrote it. First on our list is IsThisAiWritten, our own detector: free, no account, no word limit, and your essay never leaves your browser. Below are the free options that come closest, and what each one does with your essay.

Quick picks. Best free with no limits: IsThisAiWritten, which never uploads your essay. Strongest independent test results: Pangram (free daily checks with an account). Tested next to Turnitin and free without an account: GPTZero and Copyleaks. Best proof that you wrote it: Grammarly Authorship or GPTZero's writing replay.

Which AI detector is closest to Turnitin?

None is a match. Every detector uses its own model, training data and cut-off, so two tools can disagree on the same essay, and no outside tool can forecast your Turnitin percentage. The useful question is which detectors have been tested alongside Turnitin on academic writing.

The best evidence is a 2026 peer-reviewed study in the International Journal for Educational Integrity that ran Turnitin, Pangram, GPTZero and Copyleaks on the same 160 academic papers. All four correctly cleared the fully human papers. Pangram "consistently performed better" on AI, hybrid and humanized texts, while Turnitin, GPTZero and Copyleaks all underestimated how much AI text the papers contained. For a student, that points to:

  • Free, no account, tested next to Turnitin: GPTZero (up to 10,000 characters per scan) and Copyleaks (up to 25,000 characters).
  • Free with an account, and ahead of Turnitin in that study: Pangram, at about 2,000 words a day (see Pangram vs Turnitin).
  • Turnitin itself: only if your school has turned on Turnitin Clarity (see below).

Can students use Turnitin at all?

Only through a school. Turnitin's help center says it "does not sell individual licenses or single-use subscriptions". The one product individuals can buy, iThenticate credits for manuscripts ($125 for a single manuscript of up to 25,000 words at the time of writing), does not include AI writing detection: a separate help article says that is available only through an institutional or organisational subscription.

Even inside a school, Turnitin's AI writing FAQ says the AI indicator and report "are not visible to students" (more in does Turnitin detect AI?). Instructors can download and share it. The check needs 300 to 30,000 words of prose, and scores from 1% to 19% appear only as an asterisk. Some schools add Turnitin Clarity, a paid add-on that gives students a writing space inside Turnitin and gives instructors a report on the writing process; students can see their writing and similarity reports if the instructor enables them. If your teacher sets a Clarity assignment, writing there is the simplest way to show your work.

1. IsThisAiWritten

Best for: checking a full draft or thesis privately before you submit, whatever its length.

We built this one, so weigh our view accordingly. It needs no account and has no word limit, so a full thesis goes through in one check, and every word is scanned rather than sampled. The detection model runs inside your browser and a .docx file is read on your device, so your essay is never uploaded and can't turn up later in someone else's database. The report gives an outcome (Human, Mixed, AI or Inconclusive), an AI-likeness score, a sentence map of the sentences that read as most AI-like within your text, style notes with a plainer wording one click away, and a cleaner for hidden characters that copied text sometimes carries.

Like any detector, it can be wrong in both directions, so treat a result as a reason to look closer, not as proof. Our methodology explains how it is tested.

  • Pro: free, unlimited, no sign-up, and your essay stays on your device.
  • Pro: a sentence map shows where to look, rather than a single score.
  • Con: no outside tool, ours included, can tell you what your Turnitin report will say.
  • Con: English only; minimum 50 words.

Price and limits: free; best from 150 words.

2. Pangram

Best for: a free second opinion from the detector with the strongest independent record.

Pangram has the strongest independent record of any detector, including the 2026 study above, where it did better than Turnitin on AI, hybrid and humanized papers. It labels passages as human, AI-assisted or AI, which is useful if you used AI to tidy your grammar.

  • Pro: says it never uses your text to train its models.
  • Con: you need an account, and the free allowance is about 2,000 words a day.
  • Con: scans stay in your history until you delete them.

Price and limits: free plan of 20 credits a day; 50 to 18,725 words per scan. Individual costs $20 a month.

3. GPTZero

Best for: students who want to record their writing process as evidence.

GPTZero scans up to 10,000 characters without an account, roughly 1,500 words. Its bigger value for students is writing replay: it records how a document was built in Google Docs and other editors, and you can delete any replay from your dashboard. In independent tests it kept false positives low (about 0.7% in a University of Chicago working paper).

  • Pro: writing replay gives you something concrete to show a teacher.
  • Con: GPTZero keeps a copy of text submitted through its dashboard.
  • Con: a free account is limited to 10,000 words a month.

Price and limits: Premium is $23.99 a month or $12.99 billed yearly.

4. Copyleaks

Best for: students writing in a language other than English.

Copyleaks detects AI text in more than 30 languages and checks up to 25,000 characters without logging in. A free account adds sentence-by-sentence detail. In the 2026 study it correctly cleared every fully human paper, though, like Turnitin, it underestimated the AI share in the others.

  • Pro: wide language support and a generous free check.
  • Con: scans are used to train its models unless you opt out by contacting support.

Price and limits: Personal is $16.99 a month or $13.99 billed yearly.

5. Scribbr

Best for: quick, repeated checks of essay-length text with no account.

Scribbr offers unlimited free AI checks of up to 1,200 words each with no sign-up, which suits a revise-and-recheck routine. Results come in four categories, from AI-generated to human-written. A premium AI check of up to 25,000 words comes bundled with its paid plagiarism checker.

  • Pro: separates "AI-refined" from fully AI-written text.
  • Con: 1,200 words per check means splitting longer essays.
  • Con: the detector page says submissions are not stored, but Scribbr's privacy policy says collected data may be used to train its models.

Price and limits: the premium check costs $19.95 for documents under 7,500 words.

6. QuillBot

Best for: checking whether paraphrasing or grammar tools left an AI trace.

QuillBot's detector separates fully AI-written text from human writing "with some AI refinement". QuillBot cites its RAID benchmark entry, from January 2025, for a 99% detection rate.

  • Pro: support for more than 20 languages; Premium removes the word limit for detection.
  • Con: six free scans a day and an 80-word minimum.
  • Con: uses your inputs for training by default; the opt-out is only in its browser extension.

Price and limits: free up to 1,200 words per scan; Premium pricing varies by region.

7. Grammarly Authorship

Best for: building a record of what you typed, pasted or accepted from suggestions.

Grammarly Authorship is not a detector. It tracks whether each sentence was typed by you or came from a website, a Grammarly suggestion or another source, and it can replay the writing. It works in Google Docs and Word. For a student worried about a false flag, a report like this can carry more weight than any detector score.

  • Pro: free, and it shows process, which a detector cannot.
  • Con: only covers writing done while it is running, so start it with your first draft.
  • Con: Grammarly trains on individual users' content by default; you can switch this off in settings.

Price and limits: Authorship is in the free and Pro plans.

Where Turnitin is better. Turnitin reads English plus Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Turkish, Dutch and German. It sits inside the learning platforms many courses use, compares work against a large repository for similarity, and gives investigators an Authorship report. Most of all, it is the report your instructor sees, and a result from another tool carries no weight in your institution's process.

A private self-check before you submit

  1. Paste the whole essay into a detector that doesn't keep your text. Ours runs in your browser after a one-time 131 MB download.
  2. Read the outcome and its confidence word before any percentage. "Inconclusive" means exactly that.
  3. Look at the sentences marked as most AI-like and ask whether they say anything specific. The generic, over-smoothed passages a detector picks out are often the ones a tutor would mark down too, so rewrite them in your own words.
  4. Keep your drafts, notes, sources and version history in Google Docs or Word, whatever the result. They are better evidence of your work than any score, and much harder to rebuild afterwards.

If Turnitin flags your work

Turnitin says its technology does not make a determination of misconduct: it gives educators data to decide under their own policies. The authors of the 2026 study agree that detectors "should not be used as sole evidence in high-stakes decision-making". Ask to see the report, bring your drafts and version history, and request a conversation. If English is not your first language, say so. A 2023 Stanford study by Weixin Liang and colleagues found that seven detectors of the time flagged 61.22% of essays by non-native English writers on average. Our guide to what to do if you're wrongly flagged walks through the steps.

How we compared

Between 16 and 18 October 2026 we checked Turnitin's help center and AI writing FAQ, then each alternative's product, pricing and privacy pages. Accuracy notes come from independent studies or are labelled as the vendor's claim. We did not test these tools on student essays ourselves. IsThisAiWritten is listed first because it is our own tool and the free, private option with no word limit. After it come the detectors tested alongside Turnitin in the 2026 study (Pangram, GPTZero, Copyleaks), then free checkers without such a test, then Grammarly Authorship, which records how you write rather than detecting AI.

Questions

Which AI detector is the most accurate for essays?

In independent studies through 2026, Pangram had the strongest results, including a peer-reviewed study of academic papers that also tested Turnitin, GPTZero and Copyleaks. No detector is accurate enough to be proof on its own.

What is the best free AI detector for a long thesis?

IsThisAiWritten has no word limit, needs no account and runs in your browser, so a thesis can be checked in one go without uploading it. A .docx file is read on your device, and the sentence map shows which passages read as most AI-like within the whole thesis.

Is it safe to paste my essay into an online AI checker?

It depends on the tool. Some keep your text in a scan history or use it to train their models unless you opt out. IsThisAiWritten runs in your browser and never uploads the text. Check the privacy policy of any tool before pasting work you haven't submitted yet.
