Copyleaks alternative

A Copyleaks alternative with free sentence-level results and no login

By , founder · Published · 4 min read

IsThisAiWritten is a free Copyleaks alternative for English text: no login, no character cap, a sentence map without an account, and analysis that runs inside your browser, so your writing is never uploaded. Copyleaks lets you scan 25,000 characters without logging in, more than most of the free checkers we compared. People look elsewhere when they want the sentence-by-sentence view without making an account, need to check longer text for free, or don't want their writing used to train a model.

Choose IsThisAiWritten for a free, private check of English text of any length: no account, no credits, a sentence map on every check, and nothing leaves your browser. Copyleaks fits schools and teams better: it covers more than 30 languages, puts AI and plagiarism results in one report and plugs into seven learning platforms.

Why look for an alternative to Copyleaks?

Copyleaks reports over 99% accuracy and a 0.03% false-positive rate by its own measure, and publishes figures by language. The reasons to look elsewhere are about access and privacy. The anonymous scan is generous on length but thin on detail. Without an account you get the percentage of your text that is likely AI-generated. Copyleaks says the sentence-by-sentence insights, highlighted AI phrases and pattern breakdowns come when you sign up for a free account, and its explainable AI Logic feature belongs to the paid plans. For a student who wants to see which paragraph caused a high score, that means creating an account first.

The privacy policy is the bigger question for some people. Copyleaks' privacy policy says the content you submit is used to provide the service and also to train its models. Direct customers can opt out of training by emailing support. There is also a Shared Data Hub: a database of scans that other users chose to include, which Copyleaks compares new submissions against. It is optional and can be switched off, and files can be deleted from it. Still, if a draft is confidential, every one of those settings is something to check before you paste.

For scale: 25,000 characters is roughly 3,500 to 4,000 words of ordinary English, enough for most essays. A 10,000-word dissertation needs three anonymous scans, and each returns its own percentage.

Long documents cost credits. The web platform takes files up to 2,000 pages, which is plenty, but the Personal plan's 1,200 monthly credits cover up to 300,000 words (or 1,200 images).

What IsThisAiWritten offers instead

A sentence map with no account

Every check shows an outcome (Human, Mixed, AI or Inconclusive) with a confidence word, an AI-likeness score and a sentence map, all without signing up. The map is relative: it ranks sentences within your text by how AI-like they look, which is a sensible way to find passages worth rereading.

No upload, so no training question

With Copyleaks, keeping a draft out of training means emailing support and checking the Shared Data Hub setting. Here there is nothing to opt out of: the check runs inside your browser and we never receive a copy. The private AI detector page shows how to confirm that yourself.

Any length, free

No character cap and no credits. The 10,000-word dissertation that needs three anonymous Copyleaks scans goes through here as one, with one result. For books and theses, see AI detection for long documents.

An open methodology

How the detector works and how it is tested is published on our methodology page. Like any detector, it can be wrong in both directions, so treat a result as a reason to look closer, not as proof. If you write in a second language, our article on AI detectors and non-native English explains what to keep in mind with any score.

Copyleaks is the broader product. It reads more than 30 languages for AI detection and over 100 for plagiarism. AI detection and plagiarism come in one report. It integrates with Canvas, D2L, Moodle, Blackboard, Schoology, Edsby and Sakai, has a Chrome and Edge extension and a Google Docs add-on, and offers an API. Account holders can scan documents of up to 2,000 pages.

Keep using Copyleaks if you work in a school or organisation that needs LMS integration, plagiarism checks or languages other than English.

Other Copyleaks alternatives

Originality.ai also pairs AI and plagiarism checks, with three free AI scans a day of up to 2,000 words (Originality.ai alternative). GPTZero gives 10,000 characters per scan without an account and highlights sentences (GPTZero alternatives). Pangram reports a false-positive rate of 1 in 10,000 and 20 free checks a day with an account (Pangram alternatives). For a wider round-up, see the best free AI detectors.
