A Winston AI alternative with no trial clock and no account
IsThisAiWritten is a free Winston AI alternative with no trial, no credits, no word limit and no sign-up, and it runs its detector in your browser, so your text is never uploaded. Winston AI's free option is a 14-day trial with 2,000 credits, and since its AI detector uses one credit per word, that is roughly 2,000 words in total before you need a paid plan. People searching for an alternative usually want something they can keep using without a countdown or an account.
IsThisAiWritten is for people who want an ongoing free check of English text at any length, without a trial clock, an account or sending the document anywhere. Winston AI is the better fit for schools and publishers that need OCR for handwritten work, image checks or plagiarism scans.

Why look for an alternative to Winston AI?
Winston AI claims 99.87% accuracy, says it detected 99.89% of AI text at a 1% false-positive rate on the RAID benchmark, and reports zero false positives across 25,996 student essays in the PERSUADE 2.0 dataset. What sends people elsewhere is access. The trial runs out quickly. Two thousand credits at one credit per word is two 1,000-word essays, or a single long blog post with some room to spare, and the trial ends after 14 days whether you have used them or not. Winston AI's pricing page makes no secret of this: the free tier is a trial, and the Essential plan, at $18 a month (or $10 a month billed annually), brings 100,000 credits.
The minimum length can also catch people out. Pasted text needs at least 500 characters, so a short product description or a social post may not qualify.
Then there is the account. Winston AI is built around a dashboard where you label and file documents, and its privacy policy says it stores the text you submit for as long as the report sits there. Deleting a report removes the content from active storage within 30 days, and encrypted backups can persist for up to 90. Winston AI also says it does not train models on your content without explicit consent, which is a clear and fair policy. If you would simply prefer that a manuscript or client file never leave your machine, though, a hosted service can't offer that. Ours runs inside your browser, so there is no stored copy, no 30-day deletion window and no backup to think about.
What you get with IsThisAiWritten
No trial, no credits
Use it this week and next year without counting words. There is no account to create and no plan to pick. See the free AI detector with no sign-up page.
Built with fiction in mind
Winston AI markets to writers as well as schools, and many writers work on fiction. Our report includes a narrative fingerprint for fiction, a descriptive reading based on the StoryScope research (Russell et al., COLM 2026). The page for writers and our article on how AI fiction differs go into more detail.
A method you can read
How the detector works and how it is tested is published on our methodology page. Like any detector, it can be wrong in both directions, so treat a result as a reason to look closer, not as proof.
When Winston AI's trial is enough
To be fair to Winston AI, plenty of people only need one or two serious checks. If you are an editor with a single disputed submission of a couple of thousand words, the free trial may cover it. Paste the text in one go rather than in pieces: it costs the same credits and gives the detector the full context. Download the report if you need to share it.
Where the trial stops making sense is regular use: weekly essays, a newsletter you check before every issue, or a book. That is where a tool with no credits, like ours, is easier to live with.
Winston AI handles material we can't. Its OCR reads scanned documents and handwriting, which matters for paper-based classes. It detects AI images and deepfakes, checks plagiarism, supports more than ten languages, and connects to Chrome, Google Classroom, WordPress and Zapier, with an API for developers.
Keep using Winston AI if you assess work at scale or handle scanned and handwritten pages.
