A free Originality.ai alternative: no credits, no sign-up
IsThisAiWritten is a free Originality.ai alternative with no credits, no word limit and no sign-up, and it analyses your text inside your browser, so your draft is never uploaded. Originality.ai is a paid, credit-based checker built for publishers, and its free tool allows three scans a day of up to 2,000 words each. Writers usually look for an alternative when they need to check more than that without a subscription, or would rather their drafts didn't become training data.
IsThisAiWritten is built for the writer's side of the deal: freelancers, students and authors who want a free, private first look at their own English text, at any length, with no credits to buy. Use it to find passages that read as generic, not to predict another tool's score. Originality.ai suits anyone who pays writers or publishes at volume: it bundles plagiarism, fact-checking and team features.

Why writers look for an Originality.ai alternative
Originality.ai pitches itself to website owners, content marketers and publishers, so the person running the scan is often the client, not the writer. If you freelance, you may want to read your own draft through a detector before you send it. Three free scans of 2,000 words a day covers a couple of articles. It does not cover an ebook, or a week of revisions on a long guide.
Paid use runs on credits. One credit covers 100 words of AI detection, and checking AI and plagiarism together costs two. A 1,500-word article checked for both uses 30 credits, so Pro's 2,000 monthly credits stretch to about 66 such articles. That is good value for an agency. For a writer who only wants a private read of their own work, it is a monthly bill for something they use now and then.
Training is the other concern. Originality.ai's FAQ says text pasted into the free detector may be used for training, and that only account holders can opt out.
Where IsThisAiWritten is the better pick
A private read before the client's check
Run the full draft, see which sentences the map marks as most AI-like relative to the rest, and look at whether those passages read as generic or padded. That is useful editing feedback regardless of any score. Our page for writers covers what to keep (drafts, notes, version history) if your work is questioned.
No credits and no meter
There is no word cap, no daily scan limit and no account. The 90,000-word manuscript that would cost 900 Originality.ai credits goes through in one free check. See AI detection for long documents.
A client's draft stays with you
If the piece is under NDA, you may not be allowed to paste it into a service that keeps or learns from it. Our check runs inside your browser and the text is never sent to us, with no account needed and no opt-out to set. The private AI detector page explains how that works.
Every word read, with an open method
The detector reads every word of your draft rather than sampling parts of it, so the sentence map covers the whole piece. How it works and how it is tested is published on our methodology page.
If a client's Originality.ai scan flags your article
False positives happen with every detector, including to writers who used no AI at all. Originality.ai's own study reports 99%+ accuracy at its default "15% AI allowed" setting, yet the company also says an AI score should be one signal rather than a final decision, and that writing history and drafts should be reviewed before any high-consequence call. Use that. Send the client your outline, early drafts and the document's version history, and offer to talk through how you researched the piece. If you edited with an AI-assisted grammar tool, say so: Originality.ai's FAQ notes that such tools can cause false positives.
Running the piece through our detector won't settle the question, because our model is different from Originality.ai's and the two can disagree. It can show you which passages read as most generic, which helps if you want to revise them. Our guide to being wrongly flagged by an AI detector has more on handling the conversation.
Originality.ai does far more. It reads 30 languages. An "AI Allowance" setting lets a publisher decide how much AI assistance is acceptable, which suits teams that allow some AI drafting. On top of detection it checks plagiarism, readability and facts, scans whole websites, manages team roles and offers an API. It has Chrome and Firefox extensions and works with Google Classroom and Moodle. Writing Replay in its Chrome extension lets writers show how a document was typed, which can help in a dispute.
Keep using Originality.ai if you run an agency, SEO team or publication and need plagiarism checks, team roles and site scans alongside detection. Pair any score with a look at the writer's drafts before acting on it. See also our page for SEO teams.

Questions
If my article passes IsThisAiWritten, will Originality.ai pass it too?
Not necessarily. The two tools use different models and thresholds and can disagree on the same text. Our result is a private first look at your own writing, not a forecast of anyone else's score.
